As global tensions rise between Russia and other countries as a result of the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, President Biden as released multiple statements warning organizations of the potential for Russians cyber attacks on U.S. critical infrastructure.

On March 21, 2022 Biden released a statement warning "based on evolving intelligence that the Russian Government is exploring options for potential cyber attacks".

These warnings come as a response to the "unprecedented economic costs we've imposed on Russia alongside our allies and partners". Biden is referring to the multiple sanction the U.S. and other countries have imposed on Russia to deter their invasion on Ukraine. Despite not participating direct military conflict there still is the risk that Russia may retaliate in other ways, namely via cyber warfare.

This is why it is important that organizations within the private sector responsible for maintaining critical infrastructure must take cyber security seriously. CISA provides a list of 16 critical sectors that have the potential to be targeted by cyber criminals. Additionally, the white house has also provided a fact sheet outlining ways organizations can better secure their systems.
